Before You Buy a Supplement, Read These Five Parts of the Label

A product photograph can tell you the name and show you the packaging. The label tells you much more about what you are being asked to take.

Before deciding, take a few minutes to read five things.

Start with the serving size. An amount printed on the label may refer to one capsule or a serving of several. That distinction affects both the ingredient quantity and how long the bottle lasts.

Read the ingredients and their amounts. A recognisable ingredient name is only part of the information. Look for the amount per serving and the form used. If the label uses a blend, check which quantities it actually discloses rather than assuming every ingredient is present at a studied dose.

Find the directions. Do not copy someone else’s routine without checking the product instructions. An agent should be able to direct you to the label, but should not invent a dose to fit a marketing programme.

Read the warnings. Age restrictions, pregnancy or breastfeeding precautions and other cautions should not be hidden behind the promotional text. If you take medication or have a health condition, show the complete label to a pharmacist or doctor.

Check the identity and traceability details. Look for the responsible company, batch, expiry and storage instructions. Keep those details with your order information.

If the label photograph is too small to read, ask for a clearer copy. That is a reasonable request before spending money.
